Fleet A320-200 7 + 93 on order

Overview - IndiGo

Expect plenty of dynamic packaging in future with IndiGo, part of Indian travel and hospitality group, Interglobe Enterprises- www.interglobe.com . Supported by internal equity and debt funded, IndiGo is not listed.

From a standing start, IndiGo burst onto the scene in June 2005, when Interglobe Managing Director, Rahul Bhatia, shocked the industry at the Paris Air Show with a USD6.5 billion order for 100 A320 and A321 aircraft, to be delivered over 10 years. The first A320 arrived in July 2006 and the current fleet of 11 A320-200s, configured with 180 seats, is set to reach 15 by the end of 2007.

The airline’s distribution system includes a joint venture with eSpherical.com, to provide mobile airline booking and payment for its customers with GPRS-capable mobile phones or mobile PDA’s. India is the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, so this mode has become an important distribution tool.

The Interglobe Group has extensive experience in the airline industry, with expertise in distribution and back office management.

Current IndiGo destinations include Agartala, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Goa, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Nagpur, Pune and Vadodara. IndiGo has stated that it has no plans to enter regional routes with smaller jets or turboprops.

The airline’s President & CEO is Bruce Ashby, formerly with US Airways. Even though it is not yet a major player with a market share of 6.3% (Apr-07), IndiGo’s well-supported heritage and advertised plans for domestic expansion make it an airline to watch.
