Overview - Thai AirAsia AirAsias first JV set to shine in 2007 Thai AirAsia, AirAsia's first foreign joint venture operation, launched its domestic operations on 13 January 2004. Shin Corporation (associated with family interests of then Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawat) and AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes set it up as a joint venture. In mid-February 2006, when Singapore's Temasek bought into Shin Corp, Thai AirAsia's 51% national ownership requirement was diluted, prompting an ownership change, to ensure continued compliance. iIt was announced that Asia Aviation, a registered Thai company, had taken over Shin Corp's 50% stake in the company. The carrier, which is 49% owned by Mr. Fernandes, 50% by local company Asia Aviation and 1% by Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld, operates 12 B737-300s in connecting Bangkok with 19 domestic and regional cities, including four daily frequencies to Singapore (for AirAsia's only access to the city-state). The airlines entire fleet of B737s is to be replaced with new A320s with the first aircraft arriving in October 2007. The company expects to double its number of passengers in 2007 to 6 million, assisted by additional capacity, frequencies, and destinations.
