| Overview - Onur Air Onur Air – Small player in a growing market Turkey’s Onur Air is another airline principally interested in charter operations, but which has also turned its hand to LCC operations as a sideline.
The carrier concentrates its LCC services on the domestic market, where it serves 11 cities from its Istanbul base. The carrier operates to numerous Western European destinations on a charter basis, although it has been dogged by allegations of unsafe operations. These suspicions were brought into the open in May-05 when the Dutch authorities prohibited Onur Air from serving the Netherlands, a ban that was subsequently also enacted by France, Germany and Switzerland. The moratorium was ultimately lifted, and Onur Air launched a suit against the Dutch Government for lost revenue - albeit unsucessfully. While Onur's charter services have resumed, its reputation has suffered.
The LCC’s domestic operations are sold on a flat-fare basis using the carrier’s narrowbody fleet of A320 family and MD-80 aircraft, with about a million passengers a year travelling on the scheduled network. Outlook potentially promising, with work Onur Air could find itself in the right place at the right time. With Turkey potentially poised to join the EU and the economy enjoying solid growth, plus the major competition coming from an inefficient state-owned flag carrier, it is a good time to be offering low cost air services in the geographically large country.
However, in its current form, Onur Air, which could enjoy an advantage as an established name, is not poised to capitalise on this potential. With work rationalising its fare structure improving its safety reputation, it could be well positioned to connect cities within and outside Turkey.
