Ryanair announced (10-Oct-06) plans to establish its second Spanish and 18th European base at Madrid Barajas International Airport.

The carrier will base three B737-800s in Madrid and launch 14 new routes from 22-Nov-06 and targets traffic of 1 million passengers p/a see Route Changes Table for more information.

Ryanair CEO, Michael OLeary, welcomed the development of facilities in Madrid Barajas airport stating that it encourages low fares and competition and had won the new Ryanair base for the Spanish capital. He added that the new base will transform the market in Madrid.

This is the second major expansion in Spain announced by Ryanair in as many months. On 28-Sep-06, the carrier announced plans to launch a major capacity expansion from Barcelona Girona. The carrier will base four new B737-800 aircraft and launch 17 new routes from the airport from Mar-07, as well as increasing frequencies from Barcelona to Milan, Paris and Rome. Ryanair expects the new services to increase its passenger numbers at Barcelona Girona from four to five million.

Major rival easyJet also recently has significant development plans at Madrid Barajas. In late Aug-06 it selected the airport as its 17th base and its major operational hub for Southern Europe. In Sep-06, it announced plans to base three A319s at Madrid, launching additional European and Spanish domestic routes, including Oviedo and La Coruna, as well as unnamed destinations in Morocco, France, Italy and Germany from early Feb-07. As part of the build up to the expansion, easyJet also announced plans to launch Madrid-London Gatwick service, commencing 30-Oct-06.
