Jetstar Asia linked with Taiwan carrier
Jetstar Asia’s Board is set to consider a proposal to invest in struggling Taiwanese carrier, Far Eastern Air Transport. A Jetstar Asia spokeswoman confirmed the airline’s Board would be meeting tomorrow, but declined to comment further.

Jetstar Asia operates daily service from Singapore to Taipei.

Far Eastern Air Transport entered creditor protection in Feb-08, due to the loss of domestic traffic as high-speed rail services opened in 2007.

The carrier operates to eight second-tier cities in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, as well as domestically in Taiwan. It participates in cross-Taiwan strait charter services to Mainland China during four major holiday periods. Those services are set to expand to weekend charter services from Jul-08 and to daily from the end of 2008, and represent a major expansion opportunity for Taiwan carriers.

Far Eastern Air Transport operates six B757-200s and nine MD-80/90s.

Jetstar’s parent, Qantas, owns 45% of Singapore based Jetstar Asia, and 18% of Jetstar Pacific, a Vietnam-based JV. Several of the region’s LCCs, including Tiger Airways, AirAsia and Lion Air, are looking to establish further cross-border JVs in Asia.

Jetstar’s Australia-based spokesman, Simon Westaway, stated the Australian operation has no existing interest in any Taiwanese opportunity.
