Lion Air to form Malaysian subsidiary, Lion Langkawi
Indonesia's largest private airline, Lion Air, announced plans to form a Malaysian subsidiary, Lion Langkawi, in cooperation with an unnamed local partner, and open a base on the eastern island of Langkawi.

The carrier plans to use B737-900ER equipment to operate to domestic and international destinations. A launch date was not disclosed.

Lion Air previously announced plans to establish JV operations in Australia and Thailand, as part of plans to invest up to USD600 million to acquire stakes or establish new airlines in a number of Asian countries over the next five years. Last year, Lion Air also stated it was interested in investing in Vietnam, Bangladesh and the Philippines. The airline stated it envisaged investing USD50-100 million in each venture, to be funded from “internal and external sources”.

Lionair currently has 122 B737-900ERs on order, and plans to order even more B737-900ERs to support its regional expansion. The airline currently has a fleet of 43 aircraft operating a 32-destination network.
