Jetstar enters codeshare negotiations with Japan Airlines
Jetstar announced (17-Oct-06) it is in negotiations to establish a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines to allow it greater marketing access to the Japanese market.

Japanese law prevents Jetstar from directly marketing itself in Japan, including online ticket sales, only allowing the LCC to sell seats through Japanese agents who then sell the seats via packages.

The Australian Government stated that unless Jetstar signs the codeshare agreement with JAL, passenger numbers and the AUD2 billion tourist market between Australia and Japan could be threatened. Jetstar plans to launch daily service to Osaka from Melbourne and Sydney, commencing 25-Mar-07, while JAL will terminate its Osaka-Brisbane-Sydney service in early 2007.
