Vueling to operate between Madrid and the Canaries
Vueling announced plans to launch service from Madrid to Tenerife Norte and Gran Canaria in the Canaries.

Vueling will offer up to three daily services to each of the islands. In doing so, Vueling expects to carry over 300,000 passengers on each route p/a.

Vueling’s arrival into the Canaries will increase capacity by 28% in Tenerife Norte and 21% in Gran Canaria. The Madrid-Tenerife Norte route has currently 27,000 seats offered per week during peak season, whereas Madrid-Gran Canaria has over 36,000 available seats. Vueling will supply 7,500 extra seats per week into each market.

Juan Carlos Iglesias, Vueling’s Chief Sales Officer, stated: “Vueling’s operations into Tenerife and Gran Canaria are an important step in this company’s history. Both routes pull more than 1 million passengers per year each, but at the same time suffer from a very high level of demand which is not always met by the existing airlines. Capacity constraints, on the one hand, and high fares, on the other, have been one of the main bottlenecks in the development of the local tourism industry.”

In order to release capacity that will allow the company to operate into the Canaries, Vueling will stop operating some of the least-used routes out of Madrid. These routes link Madrid to Nice, Pisa, and Bologna. They were launched between Jun-07 and Oct-07, and “even though they’ve able to substantially increase the number of passengers, they have not reached the very ambitious targets the company set for them at the moment they were started operating”.

At this stage Vueling will concentrate on fewer, thicker routes, and hence the orientation in routes with many frequencies a day, which will attract business and leisure passengers alike.
