Currently, AirAsia conducts its own Engineering Apprenticeship Programme at its Academy in KLIA based on the EASA Part 66 format. Thus, the trainees for licensed aircraft maintenance engineer would have to go through licensed Part 66 module 1-17 in order to be certified by the Department Civil Aviation (DCA). The MOA with TAFE College was initiated to support AirAsia’s training programme, which includes the use of TAFE’s workshop facilities for module 6 and 7, consequently for the completion of the basic engineering skills training.
The EASA Part 66 training programme adopted by AirAsia, will enable the trainee engineers to qualify as Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers recognised by the European and International standards. This is vital as the current local aircraft maintenance licensing system is based on the previous UK CAA licensing system. EASA develops common safety and environmental rules at the European level, which has been increasingly implemented by many countries globally.
The programme incorporates recommended learning areas and technology in line with academic requirements. These apprentices would be the human capital asset to AirAsia Berhad, as they would contribute towards improving service, in line with the country’s aspiration to be a regional MRO hub.
The Chairman of MIED Dato’ Seri S Samy Vellu said: “the signing ceremony was a result of the collaboration between the two parties to initiate a technical training and education programme for AirAsia’s Aircraft Maintenance trainee technicians. Besides being a recognised training institution with the appropriate training equipment, TAFE has an Aircraft Maintenance Technology programme, which provides comprehensive 3 year training and on job training with reputed industries. The programme is accredited by LAN (MQA) and JPA”.
Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia Berhad said “AirAsia is proud to be associated with this wonderful initiative to promote training and education for the expansion of the airline industry in line with the Ministry of the Human Resources’ aspirations to create skilled manpower. This training is important as it provides the constant supply of competent engineers to meet the dynamic needs of the aviation industry in Malaysia. We are pleased to undertake this venture with TAFE COLLEGE to the aspiring individuals who yearn for a challenging, enjoyable career path and also the opportunities that comes along with it as aviation engineers”.
