Jetstar’s new daily international A320 service from Melbourne* will provide one stop competitive access between the Victorian capital and Singapore, and see Jetstar operate the only direct daylight return service each day between Melbourne and Darwin.
The new Melbourne-Darwin-Singapore* service will also grow both Jetstar’s Melbourne-Darwin and Darwin-Singapore frequencies to a double daily offering, complementing the airline’s existing daily A320 return services on these routes.
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce announced the new international route during an address to the 5th Annual Low Cost Airlines Congress in Singapore today.
Mr Joyce said the new Melbourne-Darwin-Singapore* route would be supported by Jetstar’s rapidly expanding narrow body fleet, with the Qantas Group airline having announced a fleet order in November 2007 of up to 108 A320 and A321 aircraft, including a firm order for 68 single aisle aircraft to be delivered inside the next decade.
“Our new double daily offering between Darwin and Singapore, and combined introduction of a daily through from Melbourne commencing 17 April represents a continuation of Jetstar’s strong growth profile and outlook across Australian and Asian markets,” Mr Joyce said.
“Our latest international service could also provide the catalyst for a growing hub from northern Australia’s air gateway in Darwin.”
In a wide ranging presentation Mr Joyce also outlined:
Ø Jetstar’s Carbon Offset Program, launched in September 2007, was achieving significant success with current customer take-up at Jetstar.com at an industry leading 12 per cent;
Ø Plans for the introduction of “on board” purchase of carbon credits on Jetstar from 1 July 2008
Ø The airline’s continued growth to become a predominantly long haul international carrier by 2011 with a network spanning from Australia to Asia and southern Europe;
Ø The airline’s continued low fares leadership supported by further cost containment initiatives.
“From April this year Jetstar will operate 21 weekly return international services from Melbourne Airport with our proposed daily Singapore operations joining existing international operations to Bangkok, Bali and Christchurch,” Mr Joyce said.
“Jetstar’s continued strong growth in domestic and international flying from Melbourne Airport has now risen to over 200 weekly return services.”
Mr Joyce said the airline would extend its Qantas code share arrangement to the Melbourne– Darwin – Singapore* service.
Jetstar’s daily Melbourne-Darwin-Singapore service will operate as a domestic to international connecting flight through Darwin with passengers departing from Jetstar’s domestic facility at Melbourne Airport, checking in once only and receiving two boarding passes for both flight sectors to Singapore. The same applies southbound from Singapore.
From 1 February 2008 Jetstar’s Australian based operations will service the daily Cairns-Darwin-Singapore route, currently operated on its behalf by Jetstar Asia.
