AirAsia X announces its second international route
AirAsia X announced its latest international route from Kuala Lumpur to Hangzhou, China. AirAsia X will be the first airline to service the route from Kuala Lumpur with five weekly services beginning 04-Feb-08. The latest service is the airline’s second long-haul destination after Gold Coast, Australia, which was launched in Nov-07.

The new service to Hangzhou is part of AirAsia and AirAsia X’s ongoing strategy to create and serve an extended network of cities in Mainland China, both by its short-haul and long-haul services. This latest route announcement follows AirAsia’s pre-launch announcement of its new Guangzhou-Kuala Lumpur route.

Subsequent to AirAsia’s penetration into Xiamen, Shenzhen and Macau as a group, the new service to Hangzhou strengthens and provides both airlines with greater access to a large market of cost-conscious travellers from China as more people are expected to travel with the low fares offered between Kuala Lumpur to these destinations and vice versa, in order to connect to other international destinations served by AirAsia and AirAsia X. This is expected to accelerate the growth of Kuala Lumpur as the region's leading low-cost aviation hub.

Azran Osman-Rani, CEO AirAsia X, said, “As one of China’s most prosperous and economically significant cities, it is a strategic addition to the AirAsia X network. Given its popularity among customers from our existing AirAsia and AirAsia X destinations, we are confident that there will be solid demand for the Hangzhou route, which serves the Zhejiang province and the neighbouring Greater Shanghai metropolitan. The launch of this second route in three months, alongside our super low fares, is testament to AirAsia X’s goal to make international travel accessible and a reality for all travellers.”

The first long-haul route to the Gold Coast has been a “huge success”, according to the airline, with 50,000 seats sold by mid Jan-08 valued at USD15 million. “We expect the Hangzhou route to follow the same pattern of success,” concluded Mr Azran

AirAsia X is the extension of AirAsia’s successful short haul low cost model in South East Asia. It aims to build on AirAsi’s tradition of revolutionizing the short haul, low cost carrier model by introducing a number of features unique to the long-haul service.
