The increase in Jetstar services from Melbourne Avalon, rising from ten up to 14 daily return services, will include a boost to daily frequencies on the Sydney-Avalon route of up to nine times daily from an existing six times daily service. The Sydney-Avalon route will initially grow from six to eight times daily commencing 08-Apr-08.
Jetstar will also base a second A320 aircraft at Melbourne Avalon from Jul-08, which will support further expansion of its Avalon-Sydney operations whilst also increasing existing double daily Avalon-Brisbane services to three times daily.
The carrier will continue to offer daily return services to both Perth and Adelaide with its expanded operations at Melbourne Avalon.
From Jul-08, Jetstar will operate the following A320 daily frequencies from Melbourne Avalon, offering approximately 8,500 additional weekly seats with a future schedule comprising:
• Eight to nine times daily Sydney
• Three times daily Brisbane
• Single daily return Perth
• Single daily return Adelaide
Jetstar CEO, Alan Joyce, said its continued growth of interstate services from Melbourne Avalon reinforces the strong ties between Jetstar and Linfox Airports at Australia’s fastest-growing domestic airport.
“The Jetstar/Avalon combination is really working and reinforces our successful two airports and future growth strategy within Melbourne since our May-04 start-up,” Mr Joyce said.
“Our strong performing Melbourne Avalon-Sydney service is to grow from April next year into a high frequency daily service, continuing to offer both peak morning and evening flights whilst also supported by additional day services.
“Jetstar proposes to serve the route at least 60 times weekly which will prove increasingly attractive to ever-growing numbers of leisure and business travellers using Melbourne Avalon Airport.”
Jetstar is offering a web fare special exclusive to its JetMail members of 2800 one-way fares at AUD28 to celebrate its further growth of Melbourne Avalon services. The fares are applicable to the Avalon-Sydney and Avalon-Adelaide routes.
Jetstar also unveiled an unprecedented combined offer of the special web fares and a free car parking voucher at Melbourne Avalon to be used when travelling on these services. To celebrate the ‘2800 fares at AUD28 sale’, Jetstar will provide a free car parking voucher at Melbourne Avalon for every passenger who purchases one of these special fares.
Meanwhile, Linfox Airports used Jetstar’s announcement to unveil additional extensions to the domestic terminal at Melbourne Avalon, now supporting over 1 million passengers annually. At a cost of AUD4 million, the expansion includes a second departure gate, additional departure lounge seating, new retail outlets and a 50% increase in the size of the arrivals terminal. Melbourne Avalon Airport now also supports a 1,800 space car park.
Linfox Airports has made an AUD13 million investment into its domestic terminal precinct at Melbourne Avalon that continues to support Jetstar’s domestic growth phase.
Linfox Airports Managing Director, David Fox, said the extra Jetstar services will grow domestic passenger volumes at Melbourne Avalon to approximately 1.4 million annually.
“Our existing and projected growth at Avalon remains ahead of expectations and has reinforced our belief that low-cost air travel can and is being sustainably grown from this facility,’’ Mr Fox said.
“Since 2004, in excess of 2.5 million passengers have travelled through Avalon Airport and an estimated 385,000 interstate tourists have used Melbourne Avalon Airport to access South-west Victoria, Geelong and the Great Ocean Road region, generating more than AUD300 million of economic activity.”
Melbourne Avalon Airport now also accommodates four Jetstar self service check-in kiosks to complement its traditional check-in and help support existing and future passenger growth.
“This growth in Jetstar services represents even greater travelling convenience, support of tourism and employment at both the Airport and through the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula through our greatly strengthened schedule from Melbourne Avalon,” Mr Joyce said.
“By mid-08 Jetstar will offer over 280 domestic weekly return flights across our expanding two Airport operations serving Victoria with a growing fleet of A320 and larger A321s.”
The expanded domestic terminal follows last month’s announcement by Linfox Airports to construct an international terminal at Avalon, subject to Commonwealth Government approval.
The international terminal and surrounding work will cost AUD30 million, taking Linfox’s investment in passenger terminal infrastructure at Avalon Airport to AUD43 million.
