Singapore's Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia awarded rights for Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route
(XFN Asia) Singapore-based LCCs, Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia, have both been awarded the rights to operate a daily service between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from 01-Feb-07, according to the Singapore Ministry of Transport.

Singapore and Malaysia recently agreed to allow LCCs from both countries to operate four daily services on the route as part of plans to liberalise the aviation sector.

Malaysian LCC, AirAsia, has been lobbying rights to the lucrative route, which has been dominated by Malaysian Airline System (MAS) and Singapore Airlines  (SIA) for 35 years. In Oct-07, Malaysia said AirAsia would be allowed to operate two flights on the route.

MAS currently operates seven daily shuttle services to Singapore while SIA operates the route six times daily.

Tiger Airways is 49%-owned by SIA, while Jetstar Asia is 49%-owned by Qantas Airways.
