Jetstar: two years strong on trans-Tasman route
(c) Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation: Jetstar is continuing to perform strongly on the competitive trans-Tasman route, achieving strong growth during its second year in the market, and carrying over 350,000 passengers for the financial year ending 30-Jun-07.

On the eve of its second anniversary of international services from New Zealand (01-Dec-07), independent research identified Jetstar has made significant progress in the trans-Tasman leisure market since launch.

According to Roy Morgan Single Source data for the 12 months ended 31-Jul-07, 10% of New
Zealanders flew Jetstar on their last holiday to Australia, providing a strong performance by the Qantas Group’s two major brands on trans Tasman operations out of Christchurch.

Jetstar CEO, Alan Joyce, says the research by Roy Morgan is further confirmation the carrier is on the right track on the highly competitive trans Tasman route from the South Island.

“We began our trans Tasman services two years ago with the specific aim of being the best low-cost carrier operating between Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Joyce said. “Two years on we have made demonstrated headway on our strategic plan”.

“Our trans Tasman service has achieved significant success over the past two years – allowing Jetstar to remain the largest trans Tasman carrier, based on capacity, operating from Christchurch International Airport,” Mr Joyce added.

Last month the Qantas Group unveiled a significant growth strategy for Jetstar’s narrow body operations, confirming an order for up to 108 aircraft including firm commitments for 68 Airbus 320 and A321 aircraft. These will follow an additional nine A320 aircraft progressively being added to Jetstar’s existing narrow body fleet of 23 A320s between Dec-07 and Mar-09, and the introduction of a future wide body fleet of 15 new B787s during 2009.

Jetstar’s existing long haul international operations serving eight overseas destinations from Australia, with an initial fleet of six A330-200s, has seen the airline carry over 1.1 million passengers across all its international markets, including its trans Tasman services over the past twelve months.

Jetstar operates minimum daily return trans Tasman services totaling 28 return weekly services directly between Christchurch and Sydney (10 times weekly), Melbourne (9 times weekly), daily to Brisbane (7 times weekly) and a twice-weekly return service to the Gold Coast.

As well as offering international services to Australia, and popular tourist destinations, such as Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, and Hawaii, Jetstar has also continued to expand its long-haul network in recent months throughout Asia and the Pacific to include Japan (Osaka and Nagoya) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur).
