Configured for up to 213 passengers in single class, Jetstar’s inaugural A321 operations will operate for the first time on the Melbourne-Cairns route from 18-Mar-08, operating all A321 services 11 times weekly.
The carrier will also provide further growth on the Sydney-Cairns route with existing A320 services rising to double daily (14 times weekly) from 18-Mar-08.
Jetstar is now offering web fare specials with its ‘A321 Sale’ to promote this latest growth in services for Cairns. Jetstar’s special two-for-one fares now start from AUD169 one-way on the Cairns-Sydney route and AUD199 on the Cairns-Melbourne route all-inclusive for two people.
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer, Alan Joyce, said the culmination of both recent and newly announced domestic capacity growth by Jetstar for Cairns would provide over 7,000 additional weekly return seats to the Cairns market against the prior year.
He said Jetstar was also introducing an additional daily return service for the Brisbane-Cairns route from 01-Jun-08 (rising from three to four times daily), whilst maintaining its direct four times weekly Cairns-Adelaide service.
“Jetstar’s commitment to making an ongoing investment in both growing air services and supporting greater tourism opportunities for Far North Queensland is further reinforced by these additional domestic services and strong uplift in capacity for next year’s peak travel season,” Mr Joyce said.
“We are continuing to build on our existing aircraft and crew base in Cairns by establishing a second A320 in Cairns from Feb-08 and supporting a growing international cabin crew base for our direct services to western Japan from Cairns.
“Jetstar’s growth in both domestic and international flying from Cairns is now creating around 130 direct jobs for the airline in Cairns including pilot, cabin crew, engineering and airport customer service roles.
From 01-Feb-08, Jetstar’s Australian based operations will also service the daily Cairns-Darwin-Singapore route, currently operated by Jetstar Asia, supporting an additional A320 aircraft.
Jetstar is also adding a new domestic route from 01-Feb-08 with the capacity to operate a daily Cairns-Darwin return service as part of its Cairns-Darwin-Singapore operation, increasing to five domestic markets served by the carrier from its growing Cairns hub.
Specific arrangements will continue for Qantas code share passengers on the service and a Qantas code share remains in line with all existing Jetstar international and domestic services.
Recently approved by the Qantas Group Board, Jetstar’s narrow body operations will expand by an order of up to 108 aircraft including 68 A320/A321 aircraft plus 40 options and purchase rights for the carrier is to proceed.
Jetstar has an existing fleet of 23 A320s and has previously announced an additional nine A320s for its Australian domestic operations to enter service between Dec-07 and Mar-09.
