“A November start date was always an aggressive target, and whilst we are delaying by a few months, we are delighted to announce that we will now have a fully operational terminal in Spring 2008,” said Mike Szucs, CEO of vivaAerobus. “We – vivaAerobus, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and GECAS – have been making outstanding progress to start Mexican services. An important part of these ultra low cost services is that they will operate out of a new terminal built exclusively for carriers such as vivaAerobus.”
Cancun, Guadalajara, León, Monterrey, Puebla, and Queretaro are new scheduled destinations from Austin that vivaAerobus has applied for US DOT authority to operate.
To construct the terminal, the Austin City Council recently approved the negotiation and execution of a lease agreement with GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS). This includes up to 40 acres of land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to construct, operate and maintain a low cost, “no frills” airport terminal and associated facilities, including but not limited to, parking, rental car facilities, and ground transportation staging areas.
“We are delighted with the work and plans that Austin and GECAS have completed with regard to the new facility,” Szucs added. We have worked hard to ensure that operational efficiency is at the heart of the new facility so that we have the combined benefits of an ultra low cost air service with highly efficient airport services. We look forward to passing the benefits of these efficiencies to the consumer with our world beating low fares.”
