Air Berlin scraps domestic UK routes on rising fees
(XFN Asia) Air Berlin will give up its hub in London-Stansted, scrapping all domestic UK routes, in response to increased fees for taking off and landing at British airports, Die Welt reported, citing a company spokeswoman.

"The routes don't make sense for us anymore economically," she said.

Fierce competition from rivals easyJet and Ryanair is also driving out the airline, the newspaper said.

Air Berlin currently offers services from London-Stansted to cities including Glasgow, Manchester and Belfast.  The carrier will reportedly continue to offer services from Germany to London as well as services from Hamburg and Paderborn, Germany to Manchester.
