SpiceJet plans to launch international services
(CAPA) SpiceJet confirmed plans to launch short-haul international services in 2008, subject to the Indian Government relaxing restrictions on international route rights for domestic airlines.

Ajay Singh, Director, stated, “there is not much of clarity on the new aviation policy, but we believe that the government has relaxed norms for minimum flying experience to three years from the earlier five years”.

SpiceJet plans to raise up to USD80 million through a mix of equity dilution and debt to fund fleet expansion plans. The carrier will use funds to finance ten new aircraft worth around USD450 million, the deliveries of which will commence in 2009. SpiceJet, which currently operates 14 B737-800s, plans to operate 19 by Mar-08 and 26 by Dec-08.

SpiceJet currently operates over 86 domestic services daily to 14 cities; Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jammu, Srinagar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Goa and Varanasi. Services to Kochi commence later in Aug-07.

SpiceJet posted USD17.3 million in losses on revenues of USD184.8 million for the 12 months ended 31-Mar-07, but targets break-even by Mar-08.

Date posted: 20-Aug-07.
