AirAsia confirmed (22-May-06) plans to establish a hub at Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Jul-06

The carrier will base one aircraft at the airport and launch services to Miri, Kuching and Tawau. The carrier is also considering services to China.

The Malaysian Transport Ministry announced (23-May-06) construction of a new LCC terminal at Kota Kinabalu International Airport is expected to be completed by the end of 2006. The new terminal is part of a MYR720 million airport expansion project, expected to be completed by Apr-09.

AirAsia also announced plans to launch three times weekly Langkawi-Bangkok service, although a date was not disclosed. The Malaysian island of Langkawi, near the border with Thailand, is a popular tourist destination.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Airline (MAS) confirmed it is seeking to continue operating Johor Bahru-Kuching service, which it is scheduled to transfer to AirAsia on 01-Aug-06 under the domestic route rationalisation programme. MAS has applied to the Government for the right to operate the route.
