Sydney Airport welcomes Etihad Airways and Virgin Blue Group partnership
Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Russell Balding has welcomed the announcement made today by Etihad Airways to increase services between Sydney and Abu Dhabi to twice daily.

Mr Balding also welcomed the partnership established today between Etihad Airways and the Virgin Blue Group that would deliver this outcome.

The entry of V Australia to the Middle East market by providing three direct services between Sydney and Abu Dhabi from February 2011 will be the first time an Australian airline has operated on this route.

Mr Balding said that Sydney Airport had been working closely with the senior management of both airlines for sometime. He congratulated Etihad’s CEO James Hogan and Virgin Blue Group CEO John Borghetti on this significant initiative for Australian aviation. This demonstrates the positive outcomes that can be achieved when airlines and airports work in close collaboration.

“This extra capacity is great news for Sydney and the Australian Tourism industry and for the increasing number of travellers doing business in Abu Dhabi, other United Arab Emirate states and beyond.” Mr Balding said.

It also signals the potential for further opportunities for growth in aviation services to this important destination and gateway to Europe and Asia.
