Airtran Airways launches Portland service with celebratory crustacean exchange
AirTran Airways launched services to Portland International Jetport on 07-Jun-07 with a ceremonial crab and lobster exchange. The airline's first flight from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Baltimore, arrived with a delegation of Maryland officials who brought a box of Chesapeake Bay crabs to present to Maine Governor John Baldacci. The delegation, including BWI Airport Deputy Director Jim Walsh, then returned to Baltimore with Maine lobsters presented by Governor Baldacci.

AirTran Airways offers three daily roundtrip flights between Portland and Baltimore/Washington, with one Saturday roundtrip flight to Orlando beginning 09 June 2007. Passengers departing from Portland can travel to 43 total destinations nationwide via Baltimore/Washington and Atlanta.

AirTran Airways, is one of America's largest low cost airlines with 8,600 staff who operate nearly 700 daily flights to 56 destinations. The airline's hub is at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where it is the second largest carrier. AirTran Airways' aircraft features the fuel-efficient Boeing 737-700 and 717- 200 to create America's youngest all-Boeing fleet. The airline is also the first carrier to install XM Satellite Radio on a commercial aircraft and the only airline with Business Class and XM Satellite Radio on every flight.
