WestJet's Record April Load Factor, expands executive team

WestJet has announced its April load factor of 82.8%, exceeding last year's April load factor of 78.5% and setting a new high for the month. April's results include a 16% increase in available seat miles and a 23% increase in revenue passenger miles.
Sean Durfy, WestJet President, said, "beyond the considerable year-over-year improvement in domestic load factor, our U. and Caribbean transborder deployment strategy delivered strong load factors in April. We are continually optimising our fleet deployment, benefiting from our previous experience. This has enabled WestJet to significantly increase capacity and launch into new destinations with favourable results.
"In May, as we transition a portion of our capacity back to domestic flying, we are tracking to successful new destination launches that will bring WestJet to Kitchener, Ontario, Saint John, New Brunswick, and Deer Lake, Newfoundland. These results show our value proposition is resonating with Canadians. Our seasonal network deployment strategy in combination with our people-driven exceptional guest experience is resulting in more travellers choosing WestJet," added Sean Durfy.
Overall, RASM (revenue per available seat mile) was in line with the carrier's expectations. Westjet stated, "the market continues to absorb our capacity while we attain similar or better year-over-year performance indicators".
Meanwhile, WestJet announced the appointment of Ferio Pugliese to the position of Executive Vice-President, People, effective 04-Jun-07.
He will be responsible for overseeing the airline's core human resources management and competency programmes for its more than 6,000 employees.
Mr Pugliese worked in various senior leadership roles and has gained experience in facilitating organizational effectiveness and business transformation as well as designing and implementing competency-based performance management and compensation programs that recognize and foster talent at all organizational levels.
Prior to joining WestJet his previous roles included Vice President Human Resources at Catalyst Paper Corporation in Vancouver, Director of Human Resources Development at Windsor Casino Ltd., and Director of Human Resources Development at Casino Rama, Carnival Resorts & Casinos.
