The code share arrangement with Japan Airlines as a partner airline is a first for Jetstar beyond its existing sole code share arrangement with parent company Qantas.
The duration of the approval of the code share is 30 June 2009, which is now subject to final regulatory approval in Japan*.
Last month Jetstar and Japan Airlines secured a commercial agreement to enter a code share arrangement for the daily service, and a formal application by Qantas sought the regulatory green light from the IASC.
Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said the Determination was a wonderful fillip for the airline on the eve of its inaugural Japan operations, where Jetstar will become the only carrier linking Osaka, Japan’s second largest population centre, to both Sydney and Brisbane.
Mr Joyce said the Determination outlined that there would be “no lessening of public benefits” in the arrangement, where Jetstar will launch with two class, 303 seat Airbus A330-200 services on the route.
“Jetstar’s first time entry onto the Australia – Japan market is a major proactive step by the Qantas Group in working to restore growth in inbound Japanese visitation to Australia,” Mr Joyce said.
“The Jetstar – Japan Airlines code share arrangement on the route will positively leverage an enhanced sales and distribution outcome in Japan to attract more customers, against the low operating costs of Jetstar’s two class international airline operations.
“The many submissions of support for the Qantas application, from the highest echelons within the Australian tourism industry, reflected the importance and value of such an arrangement in their eyes to help arrest the declining fortunes of this critical tourism export market.
“Jetstar will operate the new Qantas Group international route as part of the Group’s two airline brand growth strategy, and we acknowledge the support of Australian tourism stakeholders ahead of launching to our newest long haul destination later this week.”
Mr Joyce said the Jetstar and Japan Airlines arrangement would operate as a free sale code share and offer comparable class of on-board service for customers and transportation of passengers and baggage for both carriers’ code share customers.
Qantas will also extend existing code share arrangements to the daily Sydney – Osaka – Brisbane service.
