Ryanair launches Italy’s first in-flight mobile phone service onboard five aircraft
Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, launched (21-Apr-09) Italy’s first in-flight mobile phone service onboard five Rome (Ciampino) based aircraft.

This is the latest step in fitting Ryanair’s entire fleet of over 180 aircraft to allow all passengers to make and receive mobile calls and texts on all Ryanair flights.

Passengers on Ryanair’s Rome based, OnAir enabled, aircraft can now make and receive voice calls at (non-EU) international roaming rates (EUR2-EUR3 pm), text messages (50c+) and email (EUR1-EUR2) using their mobile phones, BlackBerrys and other smartphones. These price tariffs are set by each mobile service provider and are subject to each customer’s individual price plan.

The service, which is available to all Italian mobile phone (TIM, Vodafone Omnitel, Wind and 3 Italy) customers and to customers of over 50 other mobile phone operators across Europe, will ensure that passengers can keep in touch with the office, family and friends when travelling.

Ryanair celebrated the launch of its Italian in-flight mobile phone service by releasing 1million EUR1 seats for travel across its European network in May and June which are available for booking until midnight 22-Apr-09.

Speaking in Rome, Michael O’Leary said:

“Today’s launch by Ryanair is the latest step to offering in-flight mobile phone services onboard our entire fleet of over 180 aircraft over the next 18 months. This service will allow passengers flying to/from Rome to keep in touch with the office, family or friends while travelling. We expect customer demand for this service to grow rapidly and hope that customers on all our flights will soon be able to call or text from 30,000 feet to tell loved ones of yet another on time Ryanair flight.

“To celebrate the launch of this service in Italy, and to allow people to try out the in-flight mobile service, Ryanair is offering 1million EUR1 seats for travel across Europe in May and June. These seats will be snapped up fast and are available for booking on Ryanair’s website until midnight Wednesday”.
