Gold Coast Airport welcomes Jetstar’s Cairns service
Gold Coast Airport welcomed (05-Feb-09) the first inbound Jetstar service from Cairns, linking Queensland’s two destinations. The direct flights between Gold Coast and Cairns will operate three times weekly, and in addition to an expected increase in domestic travel, the service will also provide a direct link for Japanese visitors wanting to visit multiple destinations in Queensland.

Gold Coast Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Paul Donovan, said the announcement would provide key benefits to the region.

“The commencement of this service is not only great news for the Gold Coast but for Queensland tourism generally. This commitment by Jetstar will certainly help boost tourist numbers to the Gold and Tweed Coasts as well as also providing a huge boost to the Far North Queensland region.

“We see this as an incredible opportunity for two key tourist destinations in Queensland to work together and benefit from the increase in tourism numbers we will both receive.

Mr Donovan said, “We have worked hard to become a significant aviation hub in south-east Queensland and we are proud to see this strategy paying off.”

Cairns Airport Executive General Manager, Kayleen Collins said the Gold Coast service further consolidates Jetstar as a key partner of the Tropical North Queensland tourism industry.

“This Gold Coast service not only links two of Australia’s leading tourism destinations, it also provides a vital connection to Cairns from Osaka.

Ms Collins said, “I am sure plenty of our local people will want to take advantage of our new direct link to the Gold Coast, while we look forward to sharing our tropical “nature’s theme park” with Gold Coast residents.”

Jetstar currently operate international services to Tokyo, Osaka and New Zealand as well as a variety of domestic destinations.
