kulula to launch services from secondary airport in Johannesburg

kulula confirmed (30-Jan-06) plans to launch services from Lanseria International Airport near Johannesburg to Cape Town in Mar-06

Lanseria, located 30 minutes north of Johannesburg and approximately 70 minutes from Pretoria, is an ideal secondary airport.

Lanseria offers many benefits to kulula, including lower airport charges at ZAR20 versus ZAR50 at Johannesburg International Airport (JNB), operated by Airports Company South Africa, which also operates the countrys other major hubs. kulula expects future growth to be driven by services from Lanseria due to a combination of lower fares, slot restrictions at JNB and the growing catchment area.

Gideon Novick, kulula's Executive Director, stated We see huge opportunity [at Lanseria]. You just have to drive around the north areas of Johannesburg, and you see the incredible population explosion and building and all sorts of things going on over there. It just makes sense to have air services close by to that huge volume of people that live around there.
