Services from Adelaide to Alice Springs will commence on 01-Mar-09, bringing the total Tiger Airways services to Central Australia to seven per week.
Alice Springs is the gateway to Central Australia, an area which has some of the world’s most recognisable icons. Since launching services, Tiger has allowed more and more Australians to visit Central Australia. Equally, the residents of Alice have increased choice for travel to Melbourne and Adelaide, allowing them to visit friends and family, go to the footy or have a weekend getaway.
Northern Territory Airports’ CEO Ian Kew said, “By March 2009, Tiger Airways will be operating almost 10% of total seats to/from Alice Springs. Not only will this benefit the local community with low fares to Melbourne, Adelaide and beyond, but will also increase opportunities for local tourism operators with an expected increase of inbound tourists.” Alice Springs Airport General Manager Don McDonald added, “Centralians have given Tiger Airways the confidence to increase flights based on their existing patronage.
The March 2009 launch is perfectly timed to allow Centralians the choice of catching the footy in Melbourne or Adelaide next year.”
Domestic passengers at Alice Springs increased by 6% last financial year, with increased capacity from Qantas and the introduction of Tiger Airways services. The mix of a full service carrier in Qantas and a low cost airline in Tiger has allowed the market to grow, with each airline catering for a different market segment.
Tiger Airways will operate flights from Melbourne and Adelaide to Alice Springs each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with an additional Melbourne service each Sunday.
