Air Berlin appoints new sales director
Detlef Altmann (53) will be starting his new job as Air Berlin’s sales director on 19-Aug-08. Originally from the city of Essen, he is taking over from Carsten Kröger (41), who is starting up in business on his own at the end of the year.

Joachim Hunold, Air Berlin’s CEO commented, "By appointing this experienced and renowned expert in the field of tourism, we are emphasising not least the significance of our business links with tour operators."

Altmann, a qualified travel agent, was employed by Neckermann Reisen (or C+N and Thomas Cook) for 23 years. He held a number of positions in that company and was finally responsible for an annual turnover of two billion euros. He was instrumental in the restructuring of Neckermann Flugreisen (air travel), the re-launch of Bucher-Reisen, a Neckermann subsidiary, and the introduction of the early booker discount strategy. Since 2007 Altmann has been based in Nidderau (Hessen), where he has been working as an independent tourism consultant. He is married and has two children.
