The Qantas Group made the formal application to seek the green light from the IASC on behalf of Jetstar.
Jetstar has an existing code-share agreement with Japan Airlines on its Osaka-Brisbane-Sydney route, which was announced in Mar-07.
Jetstar’s new daily Osaka-Gold Coast* service, offering a tag service to Sydney five times a week, will replace the existing Osaka-Brisbane-Sydney from 01-Oct-08. The airline’s new daily Cairns-Tokyo (Narita)* service commences on 18-Dec-08.
Jetstar Group General Manager Commercial Bruce Buchanan said Jetstar was continuing to build the strong connections between Australia and Japan, with more than half a million passengers having flown between the two countries since the launch of Jetstar services in March last year.
Mr Buchanan said, “From December, Jetstar will become the largest carrier for the Qantas Group operating services between Australia and Japan, operating 19 out of a total 29 services.”
“Following the success of our code-share agreement with JAL to date, we look forward to continuing to build this relationship.
Mr Buchanan said, “Japan remains Jetstar’s largest and most important inbound market and we look forward to continuing to work closely with our colleagues and industry partners in both Australia and Japan to manage the success of these Japan services,”
Queensland Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle welcomed Jetstar’s application.
Ms Boyle said “The Queensland Government welcomes this positive initiative. We recognize this as a great opportunity to strengthen our positioning in Japan and bring tourists from other markets. We look forward to working with Jetstar and Japan Airlines to build tourism opportunities for Queensland.”
Jetstar services its Japan routes with Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering 303 seats in economy and the premium StarClass product. Jetstar employs fluent Japanese speaking crew on each flight with Japanese language content available in the inflight magazine and as part of the inflight video entertainment.
