Air Berlin CEO says fleet cuts may be greater than previously planned
(XFN-ASIA) Air Berlin plc may have to reduce its fleet by a greater number than it had planned for the end of this year, chief executive Joachim Huld said in an interview with weekly WirtschaftsWoche.

Air Berlin had previously said it planned to reduce the size of its fleet by withdrawing 14 short and medium-haul aircraft.  Huld said, "The 14 jets are only a start under these circumstances. We are examining our fleet portfolio daily," He said the efficiency programme launched by the company, which aims to reap more than 150 million euros in earnings improvement on a 12-month basis, has already "realised almost EUR35 million" this year.

The amount was achieved partly by paring certain flights for the winter schedule, he said, adding the company will "continue to act further if needed". He said Air Berlin is scrapping its plans to have a Premium Business Class in the spring of 2009.
