The carrier also announced options to purchase an additional ten aircraft, to be delivered from Mar-08 if the options are exercised.
Frontier plans to operate the aircraft to up to 18 destinations in the Colorado and Rocky Mountains region, including ski destinations such as Aspen and Jackson Hole, through an as yet un-named, wholly-owned subsidiary. The Frontier brand name will be used for the new service, with the aircraft painted in its livery, but the subsidiary will have its own operating certificate. It will operate from Frontiers Denver International Airport hub, although destinations to be served have not yet been finalised. Tom Nunn, Frontier's current VP of Safety and Security, will lead the new subsidiary as President.
In conjunction with the Q400 purchase, Frontier is also seeking partners to operate up to 20 regional jets, to either augment or replace its existing fleet of nine CRJ-700 aircraft, currently operated by Horizon Air as Frontier JetExpress. The expanded regional jet fleet will be used to develop new and smaller markets into mature mainline markets and to supplement Frontier's mainline operations.
