Southwest Airlines concluded its eight-week trial on the merits of assigned seating earlier this month with mixed results.
The carrier announced that further research would need to be conducted before it abandoned its existing methods. Southwest - who is the only US LCC to not offer some form of assigned seating - began testing a variety of boarding methods on services from San Francisco in late-Jul-06. In 2007, Southwest will conduct an upgrade of its reservation system, which will have the capacity to handle assigned seating, but has confirmed it will not make a decision on changing its boarding methods until at least next year.
