Spirit retires last MD-80.
Spirit Airlines retired (28-Sep-06) the final MD-80 from its fleet,
switching to a 26-strong leased fleet based primarily around A319s in 138-seat, two class configuration, as well as a smaller number of A321 aircraft in 198-seat, two class configuration. Both aircraft have all-leather seating. The carrier plans to take delivery of five additional aircraft before the end of the year and take delivery of five more in 2007. Spirit forecasts that the switch away from the MD-80 will save it approximately USD57 million p/a.
